Walking On Ice 2009 |
In February 2009, just after all that snow, SW Notts Explorers enjoyed an interesting evening hearing about the exploits of Andrew Cooney, a Polar Explorer and the youngest person to ever to walk to the South Pole.
Andrew spoke to a group of about 20, including some District Leaders, giving a very detailed slide show explaining the various aspects of the adventure of travelling to the South Pole. |
Bringing all his polar exploration equipment along to Pioneer ESU HQ allowed the Explorers to see for themselves how difficult it is to operate in sub zero temperatures. |
Andrew's main purpose behind these talks is to show that in spite of obstacles being put in the way any person can undertake this kind of expedition.
Of course they need the right equipment training and preparation.
Andrew had to find substantial sponsorship and his presentation was only possible due to external funding. It is no surprise that Andrew is an ex-Explorer Scout and achieve his Queens Scout Award. |
