Japan Jamboree Selection Day Nov 2013

S W Notts have been allocated two places in the British contingent attending the 2015 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Kirara-Hama, Japan. The purpose of this day was to select those 2, and also to 2 reserves in case either has to drop out for any reason. The Jamboree is open to members of the Scout movement who are Explorer age when the Jamboree begins - which is why some of the candidates are still in Troops now.

Phil Phillips, SW Notts District Chairman reported:

Bev Stubley, Stuart Stanton and I devised various stations testing varied abilities. We and other volunteers carried these tests out and adjudicated.
1. Fire lighting (and cooking the odd sausage) In groups of 4 with the approach to team work and individual skills being assessed and marked out of 20.
2. Tent pitching (ditto assessment.)
3. I Q Tests assessed individually and by team
4. General knowledge of Japan and Scouting generally 10 of each. I suspect some answers were swapped!
5. Observation test re a read out situation; questions about that scenario assessed as a group test and individually.
6. Interview (20 mins) of each candidate using a set number of questions but going where the answers took us as well.
7. Their application letter/email was also given marks.

There were 16 candidates, 8 of each gender, and overall the standards were very high. The top 6 or so were so close there was hardly a fag paper between them.

It was very difficult but we eventually came up with the 2 overall winners Sam G (Pioneer ESU, ex-2nd Chilwell) and Amy H (Pioneer ESU, ex-2nd Bramcote) with the 2 reserves being Jesse "the joker" C (1st Stapleford) and Lily O (6th Beeston). It was noted overall that the girls were really up for it and that reflected in the results.

It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and application by all the applicants and they are all to be congratulated for the way they approached the day and for the effort they put in. Really the judges would have liked to send the lot!!!!
