Inger Trophy 2007

On
a cold weekend at the end of March, a team from Magellan ESU emerged as
the winners in the first Inger Trophy competition to be run for over 10
years.
The
annual event - named after Ernest Inger, a former District Commissioner,
and first held in the 1950’s - has been resurrected as a competition
for Explorer Scouts and as a linking event for older scouts aged 13˝
years or older.
The
event was based at Drum Hill campsite and was designed to test
night-time navigation skills, cooking skills and above all, teamwork.
As soon as their tents were up, the
teams were busy plotting a number of grid points on a map, undergoing a
rigorous kit check, and working out the most efficient route round the
course. Then five teams set off into the gloom to visit each location
and record what they found there.
The 6 scouts and 20 explorers had to
deal with incidents at two of the locations -
well some of them did: other teams decided to take a more scenic route
and ignore the planned checkpoints – either that or they were dazzled
by the bright lights of Derby!
The last team arrived back just
after midnight to hot drinks and hotdogs. Several roaring fires were
lit, before everyone retired for a short sleep – an hour shorter than
expected, as the clocks went forward at 2am!
The Sunday morning was spent preparing a
“Ready Steady Cook” meal to be judged by the DC – brave man! |
| The quality of the meals
presented was variable to say the least, but all teams had a go and
everyone learned a lot about preparing food under camp conditions. |
Once
all the scores had been totted up, the winning team had romped home with
an outstanding score of 230 out of a possible 290. Well done to Lucy,
Sam, Mark, Sam and Ben, and a huge THANK
YOU to
all the team of leaders and helpers that made this event possible.
Colyn,
